Boat Transport
Whether looking for a company that offers boat transport services for vacation or a permanent move, it is imperative that you do your homework before hiring anyone. Unfortunately, more than 25% of all carriers specific to moving boats grossly misrepresent the amount of insurance the company has or their authority/ability. These illegal carriers put your boat at risk for damage or even theft. To make sure you work only with a reputable carrier, one that is licensed and has appropriate insurance, you will need to conduct in-depth research.
A great example of what an illegal boat transport company will do is use trucks without signage or incorrect signage. The company's goal is to "hide" the content (boat) so they are not forced to pay extra for permits associated with this type of cargo and to avoid having the truck weighed at weigh stations. However, if a state trooper or an official from the Department of Transportation were suspicious and the carrier pulled over, your boat could be seized until the transportation company secures the proper permit for carrying watercraft and pays legal fees for their deceitful practice.
Another possible situation when using a boat transport company has to do with damage. A professional company will gather all information, check it, and then double check it for 100% accuracy. Unfortunately, a dishonest company will often guess things such as weight and boat dimensions. What happens is that if the boat were estimated to weigh 25,000 pounds when in reality it was 33,000, the truck's rear axle is going to experience a problem at some point during the trip. If the axle were to break, the boat could be damaged and if not damaged, the schedule for the delivery of your boat could be significantly delayed while the carrier dispatches a truck that can handle switching the boat over and transporting the boat, not to mention delays due to the carrier needing to pay hefty fines.
Keep in mind that there are many reputable boat transport companies but it is your responsibility to make sure you choose the right one to get your boat safely from point A to point B. Never be afraid to ask questions and require proof of insurance and licensing. Additionally, talk to other people who have moved a boat to learn about their experience. Finally, in choosing a boat transport company, contact the Department of Transportation, asking for recommendations of reliable and honest companies.
